ToggleThe French Team in Action
From September 10 to 15, Lyon will host the WorldSkills international trades competition. Among the 1,400 candidates from 65 countries and regions, a French team made up of three young talents is preparing to take on a significant challenge: to design and manufacture an electric tricycle. This industrial production challenge is a major issue for these promising young engineers.
The Key Skills of the Team
Gaël Schaeffer, Côme Slisse, and Diodore Guerrier form this dream team. Gaël, 23 years old, excels in milling and welding. He has a dual qualification (supplementary mention and second professional baccalaureate) and a BTS in product realization process design.
His two teammates, Côme and Diodore, who are 22 years old, graduated in mechatronics from INSA Strasbourg. One specializes in mechanical design, while the other is an expert in electronics and programming. Together, these complementary skills form a formidable trio.
Intensive Preparation
The three young engineers from the Grand Est region have a clear objective: to manufacture a prototype of an electric tricycle capable of carrying loads and accommodating a driver. For the past 10 months, they have been working on this task, combining theory and practice. The specifications push the team’s innovation and creativity.
To succeed in this challenge, they meet one week per month at a metallurgy CFA in Maxéville (Meurthe-et-Moselle). Together, they work on all aspects of design and realization, from welding to electronic circuits. The final countdown, with only three days to redo everything in Lyon, will test their ability to work under pressure.
The Innovation Challenge
At the Lyon competition, the team will have to compete against six other national teams, including those from Brazil and several Asian countries. These opponents are well-prepared, some training 8 hours a day for three years with full-time coaches. However, Gaël remains optimistic. He believes that this experience has given him between 8 and 10 years of experience.
The competition drives innovation and forces young engineers to make wise compromises. Gaël, Côme, and Diodore have learned to manage projects from A to Z, simplify designs, and be more organized. The tricycle must be lightweight, economical, and fast – essential assets to stand out.
Future Perspectives
Participating in WorldSkills Lyon 2024 opens promising professional prospects for the team members. Gaël hopes to secure a versatile position in the company where he completed his apprenticeship. As for Côme and Diodore, they have already been hired by their host company.
Whether or not the electric tricycle is a success in Lyon, these young engineers have found their path. They prove that competition stimulates not only innovation but also the professional careers of tomorrow’s talents.
